What is a neck tie?
The neck tie (or tie) is a long piece of cloth worn around the neck. It rests under the shirt collar and is knotted at the throat. Men wear neck ties as part of regular office attire, formal wear or uniforms.
Neck ties are also worn as part of a uniform (e.g., military neck ties, school neck ties or bow ties, waitstaff neck ties or bow ties).
Neck tie variants include the bow tie and the clip-on tie (permanently knotted bow ties or four-in-hand tie styles) affixed with a metal clip to the front of the shirt collar and typically worn by law enforcement, service clerks, airline pilots, engineers etc. where a proper neck tie could pose a choking risk in the course of their job.
The industrial revolution created a need for neckwear that was easy to put on, comfortable and would last an entire workday. The modern neck tie, as is still worn by millions of men today, was born. It was long, thin and easy to knot and it didn’t come undone.
What is a bow tie?
The bow tie is a men's neck tie popularly worn with formal attire, such as a suit or dinner jacket. It consists of a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner such that the two opposite ends form loops.
Ready-tied bow ties are available, in which the distinctive bow is sewn into shape and the band around the neck incorporates a clip. The traditional bow tie, consisting of a strip of cloth one must tie, may be known as a "self-tie" bowtie to distinguish it.
Bow ties may be made of silk, polyester or cotton.
Selecting Neck Ties and Bow Ties by Color, Pattern or Design
Neck ties and bow ties are as unique as the people who wear them. Some people wear ties because they like the design, e.g., stripes ties or pattern ties; others wear them because of the color, e.g., black ties, blue ties or red ties.
Many people wear neck ties to confirm to organisation color or pattern requirements such as schools or sports teams. However, there are many people who wear neck ties or bow ties to express their mood, hobby, interest or time of year. Good examples of these are
• Animal neck ties
• Boat neck ties
• Tree or flower neck ties
• Santa neck ties
• Holiday neck ties
Ways to Tie a Neck Tie or Bow Tie
Many types of knots are used for neck ties and bow ties the most common being the Four-In-Hand Knot.
The other types used are the Pratt Knot, the Windsor Knot and the Half-Windsor Knot.
