It rests under the shirt collar and is knotted at the throat. Men wear neck ties as part of regular office attire, formal wear or uniforms. Neck ties are also worn as part of a uniform (e.g., military neck ties, school neck ties or bow ties, waitstaff neck ties or bow ties). What is a bow tie? The bow tie is a men's neck tie popularly worn with formal attire, such as a suit or dinner jacket. It consists of a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner such that the two opposite ends form loops. Ready-tied bow ties are available, in which the distinctive bow is sewn into shape and the band around the neck incorporates a clip. The traditional bow tie, consisting of a strip of cloth one must tie, may be known as a "self-tie" bowtie to distinguish it. Bow ties may be made of silk, polyester or cotton.
